Excellent presentation from representatives of the next generation at the Ocean Decade Forum in Nice today - a powerful message of our need to work to deliver clean sustainable ocean and seas.
Left many of the audience damp-eyed afterwards ;) 🌊

Good opening words from Vidar Helgesen at the Ocean Decade Forum in Nice - “at a bad time for multilateralism we are still making good progress we the ocean” - he also said however that much needs to be done to deliver SDG14 by 2030.

Walking in the Elan Valley earlier this week - water levels looking very low in the reservoirs, a mix of lack of rainfall, and planned engineering work.
The UK really does need to build more water storage infrastructure as rainfall patterns change and the whole place warms up.

Taking time lapses last night with my @omsystem.bsky.social camera and noticed in one frame at 00.02.53 UTC there’s a nice bright meteor heading west. A rare clear night!

After a couple of weeks offline while on vacation in New Zealand I’m attending the BBNJ Symposium 2025 in Singapore on behalf of @seabed2030.bsky.social - good to see progress towards ratification and recognition of why better seabed maps matter. UNCLOS father Professor Tommy Koh speaking too!

Spectacular natural coralligenous seabed structures in c.130m waters north of Corsica in presentation by Julie Deter of Andromède Océanologie shown at Exail Maritime Users conference Amsterdam today - I’ve never seen structures like them before.

Lovely afternoon in the Bannau Brycheiniog today - visited a couple of new businesses doing their part to grow a sustainable economy here, good to see young people taking the risk.

Photos from field trip to Greenland in ‘22, with @johnenglander.bsky.social & the Rising Seas Institute. Beautiful country. Proud people, rich culture.
But Greenland is not for sale, & it’s shocking that the incoming president of a NATO ally would suggest annexation - that’s what Putin does!

Happy New Year - enjoying the first sunshine for a while with a day out on the Talyllyn Steam
railway with my son & his wife. Worth a visit - a good example of former industrial infrastructure finding a new life in tourism & leisure, providing employment and training opportunities.

This memory from July 2012 popped up on my iPhone - group photo I took of staff who had sailed on the old RRS Discovery to celebrate her 50th Anniversary. Lots of faces from my career in there - happy memories. Venue is @noc.ac.uk

From Dublin this morning, to London this evening - a day of contributing to our much-needed conversation about the global ocean - as Jo Ruxton of Ocean Generation said tonight ‘be an imperfect environmentalist’ - even just making small changes can make a difference.
