Happy Midsummer! This time of the year all Finns rush to the shore of the sea or a lake, a huge bonfire is lit and the nightless night is celebrated. Finnish cities turn into ghost towns because everyone is rushing to the countryside. I am already there and this is potato field. New potatos ready!

It is delighted to walk into Wild Marjoram (Origanum vulgare). It like fresh pizzeria’s scent. Flavor is more powerful than in store’s oregano.

The first blooming period of Yellow Toadflax (Linaria vulgaris) is started. The second starts in end part of August. Then in masses.

Despite Herb Robert’s (Geranium robertianum) the beauty of the flower people find the smell of the flower unpleasant. The smelly liquid that is acquired by boiling the plant is used in Finland to get rid of bugs and also to treat wounds.

Tufted Vetch (Vicia cracca) is one of better-known Pea family plants, and one of the most common meadow species.

Spreading bellflower (Campanula patula) is easy to differentiate from its relatives by its more reddish and more narrowly based leaves. White-flowered plants can also be found, although they are clearly rarer than the purple ones.

Bristly Bellflower (Campanula cervicaria) beautiful, but it has clearly declined as its traditional habitats become overgrown.

Black medick (Medicago lupulina) has arrived and settled into Finland relatively recently. It is widely distributed but fragmented throughout southern and central Finland around harbours, on lawns, by railways and on waste ground.

Biting Stonecrop’s (Sedum acre) flower is rather beautiful. It Biting can thrive in unbelievably thin soils and can survive up to half a year without water.

Nottingham catchfly (Silene nutans) is not beautiful flower. In Finnish it is nodding campion. The flowers open up in the evenings. Stem is very sticky.

Ragged Robin ;Lychnis flos-cuculi) is great English name for the flower. In Finnish it is officially cuckoo’s flower. The folksy name is snakeflower.

Now here is Herb Bennet (Geum urbanum), which can interbreed with Water Avens (Geum rivale. Herb Bennet grows on slightly drier soil than its relative water avens Water Avens and it begins to flower slightly later. And it is its time to bloom.

Big fat Meadow Buttercupa (Ranunculus acris) have appeared in meadows and field margins. It is a very diverse species which has developed different subspecies in different habitats.

Now, here is real Water Avens (Geum rivale). Water avens’s large, nodding, reddish brown flowers make it an impressive sight and an easily recognizable plant. It is relative to roses (Rosacae).

Perennial Cornflower (Centaurea montana) is originally native to central and southern European mountain meadows. After having been cultivated for a long time as an ornamental, it has made itself at home here and there in southern and central Finland.

May Lily (Maianthemum bifolium) has Finnish name ”squirrel’s berry”. But May Lilys berries are sickly sweet, but they contain compounds that affect the heart, and even a few grams can be dangerous.

Sticky Catchfly (Viscaria vulgaris) is symbol of the beginning of summer. It can handle long periods of drought because its taproot sinks up to a metre into the ground. It is best known however for the reddish-brown sticky substance that covers the upper part of the stem. Easy mix into Red Campion.

Mouse-ear Hawkweeds (Pilosella Pilosellina) ar are one of most diverse plant groups. Their seed subject matures into a seed without receiving pollen from another plant, which means that descendants are clones of the mother plant.

Goat's-beard can still elude sleepy-headed botanists because it only blooms in the early hours of the morning: at midday it closes up again and merges back into the background.
