The native false sunflowers host the aphids. Native ladybugs (not the invasive orange lookalikes) feast on tbe aphids. They seem to crawl up, snatch one, and crawl away.
Meanwhile the City of Ypsilanti, Michigan, has decide to go to war with me and my neighbors who have native gardens.

A bunch of native plantings on Bluesky today. Its not all pretty flowers. Lets dont forget compost piles, piles of wood chips ready when needed, and just green stuff.

Totally done did it.
Black plastic all summer and fall.
Plant some stuff in the spring or fall depending.
Cover everything else deep with arborist wood chips (free!) Until youre ready to plant there.
Curb your lawn mower

No Kings rally and march in Detroit. I went with an old friend and we had a lovely and tiring day of it. Not to diminish the era-ending danger we are in, we enjoyed our time together. Memo to younguns, hold on to what you got.
There was a long rally with speakers we couldnt hear.

Joni Ernst is getting a lot of attention for her "we're all going to die" explanation for why only affluent people deserve health care.
This from her Wikipedia entry as of 1:20 pm on June 1, 2025

Here is a counter protestor with a large Musk+Trump DOGE flag. I went over and chatted briefly with him. He was a man if few words, letting his mighty flag do the talking

I just got back from Warren/Roseville MI, where there was a very energetic protest against Trump, who was holding his 100-day shindig.
Many more young people than at the April 5 Hands Off rally in Detroit. I had to leave early but we were having a good time.
I have no deep thoughts other ...

Here is a porch ceiling we finished yesterday. Tongue and groove mahogany. One piece still to go. This required a setup of 3 miter saws and 2 routers. Most days 3 carpenters. It started out like a week of Mondays. Difficulty with tools, layout, material but mostly organization and getting along

More Geoffrey Hill. Its a mouthful. Always worth rereading. From his early book "For the Unfallen"

One more set of basement stairs that I framed and trimmed. Very satisfying. The finished surface will be carpet, so you see the plain pine treads and risers.

Finishing up a basement remodel for a very nice (white) woman who dies foster care for young children. Her (black) adult son with some obvious disability came over to see the progress. They were nice together. Right now she has a very disabled infant for about a week.
Probably some Medicaid funding.
