We develop a model of cognitive and noncognitive skill development, consistent with our findings. Child agency is key: each period, children decide whether to exert effort, which boosts immediate outcomes and builds noncognitive skills over time via “learning by doing.”

2️⃣ Adverse weather shocks (droughts, floods, frosts, erosions) cause a slight decline in cognitive test scores but a significant increase in noncognitive skills.
3️⃣ Past exposure to adverse weather shocks is linked to better mental health resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We analyze longitudinal data from Ethiopia (@yloxford.bsky.social), and here are our key findings:
1️⃣ Parental wealth strongly correlates with cognitive skills but only weakly with noncognitive skills like generalized self-efficacy, self-esteem, and internal locus of control.
