To be clear: I will never apologize for advocating for my community. Calling out hate shouldn’t be devisive. This isn’t a both sides issue. This isn’t a difference of opinion, it’s hate. LGBT+ rights and frankly nobody’s human rights should be up for debate. I believe very strongly violence is never the answer but we must also acknowledge the harm done by individuals like Charlie Kirk. It is undeniable his words have increased hate to marginalized people. As a trans public figure I experience this hate. Promotion of violence only leads to more violence. I also encourage everyone not to jump to conclusions yet. We still don’t know who exactly did this yet or their motivations and speculation is dangerous. Today is the 24th anniversary of 9-11 and it is important to remember the hate that sprung up shortly after those attacks that targeted Muslims and the Sikh. It is important to condemn individuals not groups. Please continue to be empathetic. It isn’t weak to be empathetic, it’s a sign of strength. It’s our greatest tool against facism. For as hard as it is, we must never stop our hearts from breaking when atrocities- including yesterday’s school shooting.
