There are now more Democratic women in Virginia’s House than Republicans — total.

I tried to give his long take a fair hearing and was not prepared to wade through this.

Ta-Nehisi Coates has this beautiful little essay about his time teaching writing at MIT that nails it, I think.

Today I learned that MIT is in Massachusetts because its founder, William Barton Rogers — a UVA prof and the state geologist — decided he just couldn’t with Virginia anymore.

We used to be a proper country.

“[T]here are more ways of building a valid districting plan than there are particles in the galaxy, and every one of them will produce a 9-0 Democratic delegation.”

Hell of an abstract kicker.

Pedagogically, is this an overwhelming or empowering lens for starting an intro stats class in a policy school?

Emily Dickinson's take on telling "all the truth" looms large in my mind...

I'm back teaching stats in a School of Public Policy this fall, and I can't decide whether to show this clip from Game of Thrones on the first day of class or the last.

Knowledge can be helpful, but power is power.

Hey UVA — if you put these at waist height right next to elevators, absent-minded professors will push them to try to get on. And then it’s a whole situation.

The National Science Foundation just chose its latest round of prestigious student fellowships:

60%+ in computer science
0 in life sciences (yes, zero)

This govt does not have a human vision for our future.

Today I learned elder millennials are higher on civics than everyone else. Splains a lot.

(I don't live in Chesapeake and am extrapolating from Virginia cities I know better with similar local/state/federal voting patterns to the ones described in the article.)

Since I happen to have these data close at hand -- here they are. Cville can get up to ~8K in a Dem primary with a highly competitive top of the ticket. This low ~6K figure is standard when there's not a bunch of money spent on staff and TV.

Turns out immigrants do a lot of work — many people are saying!

If elected AG, Shannon Taylor should recuse herself from cases involving Dominion and regulated utilities — given the $650K+ they’ve already given her.

Virginians need to know their Attorney General works for the public, not a private company.

It’s a history lots of local Dems don’t know — though the party has played a huge part at every stage.

BLS is ending access to restricted use data because they want Americans to know less about these things:

When politicians say America was founded as a Christian nation, I wish Monticello had subpoena power to summon them back for re-education.

Google is now hallucinating summaries of conversations that haven’t even happened yet.

My colleague Matthew just emailed me a budget to review.

I haven’t even read it yet — let alone agreed!
