Exactly. Poetry starts with the self, even if it’s outward looking or speaking universally. In the article you linked, the phrase is also in quotes, so I wonder if there’s a further context/source

I wonder where the phrase is from and what was meant by it, seeing as it’s in inverted commas. And I agree with you about it being part of the journey. We all have to start somewhere so it’s seems pretty unhelpful for new writers to dismiss these early poems or call them bad
