On this day 1953: Nurses of Wilton Ward, Salisbury District Hospital with a harvest display on an x-ray trolley. This was pushed around wards during an afternoon service when members of Church Street Methodist Church sang harvest hymns to the patients. salisburyhealthcarehistory.uk/themes/nhs_y...

We've been examining portraits in our collections, especially this one of Adeline Cable (1864–1944) pioneering nurse who served during the Boer War in South Africa. In 1907 she became Matron of Salisbury Infirmary, a position she held for 18 years, salisburyhealthcarehistory.uk/adeline-cable/

We're researching Salisbury Infirmary's Black List that documents patients barred from entry between 1820-1914. It contains stories that tell so much about our society. Many were thefts or absconding, others are more curious such as Mary Moody in 1853, recommended by Lady Bath, listed as imposter!

1/2 We found this interesting advert for electric Vehicles in a news clipping from 1943. Electric vehicles were rare, however during World War II, fuel rationing and military needs spurred some interest in alternatives such as delivery vehicles (like milk floats or small utility trucks)

Currently we're researching 2 pastel portraits by Margaret King created in 1782 of Mr John Tatum, the 1st surgeon at Salisbury Infirmary & his wife Catherine Pike. Margaret exhibited with the Royal Academy & critics said of her "We have observed for some years the rising excellence of this artist"

This watercolour painting, by Michael Charlton, is of the Harcourt House dated 1981. It depicts a view of Harcourt the nurse training school (1953-1992). It was donated to the hospital library in memory of Dorothy Boulter who was a nurse tutor salisburyhealthcarehistory.uk/artwork-capt...
