This brightness against bare branches makes them easy to identify and I spent 90 minutes snapping vines to liberate what should become a promising mess of ash and cherry now that it can breathe. Again, nobody will touch this fruit, so let it rot with the vines and do some good when it is recycled.

Either way, prune while you can to discourage this.

3. When I first saw the berries I thought they were hawthorn and I'd once again reimported a plant already right there, but a closer look revealed bittersweet. Unlike hawthorn, the berries are toxic. Nobody wants them, so they hang on the vines.

The root simply cannot support 2 trees competing. Gravity guarantees that sooner or later they'll split at the crotch, killing at least one trunk and threatening the other if the stress was too extreme. So far the remaining tree is doing great. Possibly the feeling here is of loss but also relief.

2. That hemlock crashed because it was attached to a somewhat bigger and more ancient trunk as a codominant leader. Nature hates this.

The real miracle of their survival is that their trunks slipped through the branches of the giant on the way down. Everything we don't see was annihilated, dying with the giant. However as the log decays and the survivors rise their habit will betray the interruption of the dead branches that ...

... massive fallen hemlock might initially look like a sentimental homily about new life stubbornly rising through the wreckage of the past, but in reality the hemlock just crashed about six months ago and these are the lucky survivors that sprouted years before and had no time or ability to dodge.
