Yeah, I think a lot of bskyers have a weird complex about using the site. I do prefer it to others, but it's still small and a bit niche. I want it to takeoff, but like, I also know that other platforms have audiences ten times as large, even if the platforms are hostile to creators.

The big difference to me is that they're way more nihilistic today. The Bush-era party functionaries had terrible values but did believe in things. Now they don't even have that to lean on. Everything is a joke and nobody feels any connection to the damage they cause.

Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 1972 might be my favorite non-fiction book from Thompson. The levity of the anecdotes helps smooth the edges off of a horrible election tale, arguably as bad as 2016.

I still remember the moral panic that ensued when the author of The Bell Curve faced firm protests for giving a speech at a college. But like, he argued that we needed to cut welfare to keep the poors from breeding! Why is this worth promoting?

The problem with this logic is that compromise is the domain of politicians, not activists. Activists are there to advocate for their interests. And now that we're in a pushback period on LGBT rights, surrendering rhetorical ground gives space to those attacking our rights.

I think it's really fascinating that "Defund the Police" drew heavy scolding and poll-testing by centrists, but the strip mining of the government under Trump was sane washed for at least a month as making government more efficient, just done poorly, by many of the same commentators.
