I came round to thinking that 'Open' should flow from some fundamentals Inc rights, integrity, reward, author ownership for their personal dissemination and use (where, when, to whom, etc), equity, etc. ie open as a result, not as an end in itself.

You gave a beautiful eulogy - thank you. I only knew John relatively recently. He showed me great kindness, especially taking me to see an exhibition of Shakespeare first folio.

Great stuff. 😊 Don't forget rights. Authors, supported by institutions, need to retain original rights so they can disseminate and use their own works as they choose, whatever the output type. It's a fundamental aspect of regaining sovereignty.

😊 IMO change is also helped by institutions (admittedly made up of academics) supporting their academics eg by adopting rights retention policies. See for eg excellent statement by N8 and N8's Rights Retention initiative

I came down to thinking we'd been looking down the wrong end of the telescope: starting with openness & budgets. Instead start with academic principles of what's desirable eg control, rights, dissemination (what, where, how, when), integrity, equity, assessment, recognition. OA etc then a result.

Excellent cards. Additionally, institutions adopting RR policies are supporting their own academics, by enabling them to use their own works as they choose.

Hurrah! The value of making music. It's why music education is so important
Try the tenor (alto) recorder for a lovely mellow tone.
