Age yourself with a toy from your childhood.

I specifically had these two. I don't even remember if there was a Leo and Mikey from that set lol

12. Rogue Labyrinth was not my first foray into roguelites, but it's been incredibly enjoyable. The gameplay, writing, & artstyle are all amazing and crafted with care.

Disclaimer: I am the composer for this game, BUT as a tester as well, I've been really impressed with how it's been coming along!

11. GTA V

I wouldn't normally double dip into a franchise, but this is a game I've continued to play for *checks watch* 11 years now? Love the over the top triple protagonist story, lots of great memories playing GTA Online w friends, & I still play it fairly frequently w @salgexicon.bsky.social

10. Donut County is basically pseudo-reverse Katamari to me.

While I love the Katamari games, I never played them growing up, as my household was almost exclusively Nintendo. I came to find how challenging they can be, especially at later levels.

Donut County is chill, fun, & it has raccoons!

9. Elden Ring took the Soulsborne genre into an open world direction, which worked surprisingly well for its style of gameplay to me. Multiple ways to deal with obstacles, even mandatory ones, & I get to play a martial arts monk in a medieval fantasy game!

8. Conker's Bad Fur Day is a product of its time, nestled well within genre parody movies like Scary Movie & raunchy comedies like American Pie. Its references to media ranging from Clockwork Orange to the Matrix were perfect for my edgelord teen days, & I still enjoy how it plays out.

7. Eternal Darkness was my first horror/thriller. Its iconic sanity effects, while tame & formulaic by today's standards, were genuinely unnerving to me, especially as I was new to the genre. I also loved that the game's 4 main locations were revisited in different time periods across 2 millenia.

6. Perfect Dark was, to me, the perfect evolution of the console FPS standard set by Goldeneye. I loved the combinations of aliens, government conspiracies, & slight cyberpunk feel of it, & the content beyond the story had plenty to keep me going with it!

5. GTA Vice City was not only the first GTA game I played, but the first crime sandbox one. Being a child of the 80s, I felt the game nailed the aesthetic of.. maybe not the reality of the time, but an idealized one represented all manner of media, from Scarface to Miami Vice.

4. Donkey Kong Country 2

Platforming was my main genre in gaming early on, & the original DKC evolved the experience for me in ways I'd never have thought before. The sequel was everything I could've hoped for & more, especially with its optional lost world!

3. Super Mario RPG was the first turn based RPG which caught my interest. I played Final Fantasies 1 & 4 prior, but SMRPG bridged that gap between action & RPG with its iconic Mario platforming & timed hits. Well written, & the music alone made Yoko Shimomura one of my fave composers to this day!

2. Riven

Ever since I played its prequel, Myst, a game which values puzzle solving over reflexes, which was unheard of for most of the gaming I was used to prior, I knew I needed to play this when it released, as it greatly expanded upon Myst's limited but interesting story.
