“Calm the hell down,” she said. “That’s not why I’m asking. If I gave a single f*** about money, then I wouldn’t be living in a run-down apartment in the middle of f***ing Marapul. But tell me, Princess loose-lips, with Mr. ‘flying around Ulric’ on the loose, how long do you think a secret like this can last? Understanding the value of a secret is important, and ‘value’ doesn’t have to mean money. For a long time, the value of my secret was my safety. But for something as nebulous as ‘Could Dragons be living among us?’… I actually don’t know what the value of keeping that secret is. I don’t understand the kind of ramifications it would cause if word got out. That is what I want to know.”

I shook my head and tried to think. None of it was adding up. I started climbing the pile of rubble a bit. “Where are you going?!” he asked, annoyed at my unresponsiveness. “Shine the light on the ceiling please,” I replied. He obediently angled the light up for me and I began to take a very close look around the rim where the hole met the ceiling. “What is she doing?” I heard Erina whisper. “I’m sure she’ll tell us once she’s done,” he replied. “Clock is ticking, Jane!”

I slid my legs over the edge of the bed and stood up. “So I just need to smack you around until you shape up? Is that what I’m learning?” Her smile grew as she continued packing. “Honestly? It sure as hell doesn’t hurt! I mean… it can hurt, but in a good way, you know?” “Ex… cuse me?” “It gets the blood pumping!” She bounced on the carpet a little. “Whenever either of us were being moody, we would have ways to pick each other up. Hell, I’ve been learning tricks to pick you up, too. I know how much you like those cookies.” “Yeah, well… I keep telling you, cookies are cheating.”

I opened my eyes, and gave him my answer: “No.” Cam sighed in frustration. “Jane…” “There is no crater,” I lied. An awkward moment of silence passed between us. I looked him directly in the eye, and spoke slowly, calmly, and clearly. “We never found this place. None of this ever happened. You’re going to let me go, get the map out, and point us in the right direction. I’m going to go have a chat with the girls, and we’re never going to speak of this again.” He just stared back in disbelief. “That’s an order,” I commanded. Time felt as though it stood still. His concerned gaze never left me, but behind his eyes I could see a man in complete shock. After a moment’s pause, he reluctantly let me go.

My world has different types of magic that are color coordinated! Depending on how magic is filtered from the Source or manipulated, the colors differ.

Primarily only common (blue) magic is taught, as every other type is either too dangerous or the requirements can't normally be met.

She nodded, and began listing them off to ensure we were on the same page. “Blue is common magic from the Source, red is focused ludari magic, black is obviously black magic, white is soul magic, and green is curse magic.” “Soul magic?” I asked. “I’ve never heard of that.” “It’s… things like shapeshifting, or flight.” “Oh! I…” I paused and thought about it for a moment. “I guess it does glow white, doesn’t it?”

A shock wave of unstable magic erupted through the warehouse so violently that it felt like the world was coming to an end. The crates we had ducked behind had softened the blow, but I could sense my personal magic barrier beginning to fail. A piercing, screeching whine lingered in my mind so clearly that I could still hear it long after it was gone. It was a sound that I had always been warned of, but thankfully had never heard before then. It was the sound of magic gone wrong. My instructors had always explained how dangerous misfires were, but it was Raziel, the royal spymaster, who truly instilled the fear of it into me. He told me “It is the sound of death itself. The sound of Rix severing a soul from this world.” Misfires were normally sparked by one’s failure to keep the threads of magic woven while casting a spell. It would cause their weave to unravel, destabilizing it and breaking it apart. The destruction of the threads would cause a chain reaction, resulting in a powerful explosion of raw magic.

He laughed and tightened his grip around her neck. “Did you really think that you could lay a hand on me? Did you think I would not safeguard myself from him? He may have you in his grasp, but I still have a leash for you.” The man let her slip from his hand, but she never touched the ground. As his fist closed, a green shackle appeared around her neck, with a chain leading to his hand. She dangled and kicked in a blind panic as she pulled at the cursed magic that choked her.
