Part 4: Finally, after some months, I have completed the next stage. Now I have just two steps left: feet which allow for clamping to a table, and the vise gripping blocks of wood. I have ideas for both, so hopefully I can make some meaningful progress this Christmas vacation.

Part 3: I finally decided on inserts and bolts since I could use two longer inserts where the holes are. The longer inserts stand proud and meet up with the vise surface. Since the top of the inserts touch the mating surface of the vise this should be fine, as there is no stress on the wood threads.

Part 2: For this workbench I got stuck because there were no screws with the vise to attach to the workbench. I routed the extra material and the depth slipped without me noticing, so on the left the ends are 8mm deeper. Two screws to hold the vise go in those spots so finding a solution was tricky.

Part 1: When I am doing personal projects, I have to pause the project for certain stages while my brain works its way through the various possibilities, until it finds a solution it is happy with. This can take real time, but I have just always been like that.

It has been ages since I did something this goalless and unimportant. Feels great.

If this was tried in Germany, the train would fly off the tracks somewhere in the underfunded eastern Bundesländer. If it was tried in Britain, the front of the train would be plastered with thousands of dead drunks every evening.
