(pathologist here) pretty much any slide kept around would be formalin-fixed tissue, so not a risk for transmission of anything. The process of making slides for pathology has changed surprisingly little in the last 100 years.

That number strikes me as a bit high, at least for people without other risk factors. As per the NCI, the lifetime risk of developing ovarian cancer is 1.1%. I would expect the Canadian numbers to be similar. But definitely important nonetheless!
