I believe that it is incumbent on higher education ID, IT, and digital learning departments to have their IDs train on the tools used in many types of ID projects to increase their skill sets, which will help them succeed in more environments than solely higher education. (5/5)

In my last organization, the ID role was divided into instructional designers and course developers. Because the course developers did all the hard technical work such as image design and video storyboarding, they were actually better prepared to jump to corporate than the IDs. (4/x)

The dependence on tools like Articulate and Camtasia in corporate ID coupled with the lack of experience in them needed in higher education ID leads me to believe that higher education IDs looking to jump to corporate roles are inadvertently being set up for failure. (3/x)

In my almost 9 years as an ID in higher education, not once did I ever have to use any Articulate program, Camtasia, or anything like that. Instead, I worked in D2L/Brightspace, Canvas, Microsoft 365, and the Google Suite to build courses and communicate with SMEs. (2/x)
