If it helps with your decision, I think in my experience the methylphenidate really did work while I was taking it. It just came with the side effect of being a significant appetite suppressant.

I used to take methylphenidate for concentration, and risperidone for impulsive behavior control. Stopped taking them because changes in my life meant they were no longer needed.
