The past 5 days of data tracked by @indypedcrisis.info tells a pretty bleak story — 22 reported incidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists (averaging more than 4 per day), including 3 incidents resulting in serious injury and 1 fatality.

Ahead of tonight's Public Works Committee meeting, Safe Streets Indy calls on the committee members to reject any DPW budget that does not include sufficient funding for Vision Zero efforts starting in 2026.

Safe Streets Indy calls on members of the Public Works Committee to reject any DPW budget that does not include sufficient funding for Vision Zero efforts starting next year. Just because the Vision Zero Task Force failed to meet the Action Plan deadline does not mean the Department of Public Works cannot fund and implement proven Vision Zero "Action Plan" countermeasures in 2026. Delaying this funding will make Vision Zero less likely to succeed, and will extend the increasing number of traffic fatalities and serious injuries on Indianapolis' roadways.

🆕 🕸️ NEW ON THE WEB: We've added a Heatmap option for Serious Injuries to the @indyvisionzero.info website!

You can now see a heatmap of just Traffic Fatalities, just Serious Injuries, or a combination of Serious+Fatal — for all road users in Indianapolis.

🕸️ NEW ON THE WEB: We've updated the charts and tables on the @indypedcrisis.info Statistics page to include Serious Injury counts. Serious Injuries are now broken out from Non-Fatal Incidents for the Severity and Type charts for all of the various breakdowns (month, district, etc).

🕸️ MORE WEB UPDATES: We've updated the @indypedcrisis.info Dashboard to include Serious Injury counts.

Previously the dashboard only broke out fatal vs non-fatal. Now that we have a year's worth of Serious Injury data, we wanted to break those incidents out from just "non-fatal".

🕸️ NEW ON THE WEB: We've updated the @indypedcrisis.info Heatmap to include Serious Injuries.

Fatal incidents have a weight of 5, serious injuries have a weight of 3, and non-serious/non-fatal incidents have a weight of 1. These weights are now published alongside the map.

Previously we added a "Nearby" map to the Incident Details modal, which is still available. This map shows all incidents that occurred within 1 mile of the incident being viewed since the start of our tracking.

We've added a summary to this section with details of what is being shown on the map.

🕸️ NEW on the @indypedcrisis.info website: "Nearby Recent Incidents"!

When viewing the details of an incident you will now find a new section near the bottom of the details modal. This table will show any incidents that occurred within 1/4 mile during the 90 days prior to the incident being viewed.

I would not frame this as a loss for neighbors in Mapleton Fall-Creek. I would frame this as a win for people being able to safely move around our city outside of a vehicle. Complete Streets bike lane projects such as this one should be a priority for our city, and it is great to see that this one will move forward. We applaud Councilor Ron Gibson (D8) for standing up for this project. Similarly, the bike lane project on Pennsylvania Street through Meridian-Kessler never should have been scrapped. Councilor John Barth (D7, Vision Zero Task Force Chair) worked with the Merdian-Kessler Neighborhood Association to help kill that project after opposition due to a loss of street parking. The City of Indianapolis should *never* cave to residents fretting about losing parking over the safety and wellbeing of those traveling our streets on foot or on bike.

Hi Tony! Right now the map will only show a pin for bus stops that have had the minimum number of incidents occur near them (as set by the filter on the page). Any of the pins that show on the map should be interactive and clicking one should show the incident list for that Bus Stop.

The location of this morning’s bicyclist fatality is one we sadly know well. Last September a volunteer install one of our “How Many?” signs here due to 4 prior non-fatal incidents. Since, there has been two additional non-fatal bicyclist incidents.

Now a bicyclist is dead.

"Safe Streets Indy was grateful to learn that the Vision Zero Task Force is finally holding a second meeting. In the six months since the Indianapolis City-County Council passed this Vision Zero proposal, there have been more than 50 traffic fatalities on city streets including 19 of our most vulnerable road users — pedestrians and bicyclists. Meanwhile, the Vision Zero Task Force has only met once and has taken no public comment. We call on Councilor Barth, Vision Zero Task Force Chair, to commit to greater transparency and urgency as it moves forward in 2025."

HEADLINE: “Battle over bike lanes shows challenges of achieving Vision Zero” STORY: A proposal to install protected bike lanes on Pennsylvania Street in an affluent section of Meridian-Kessler faced intense opposition from some neighbors who didn't want to lose on-street parking. The city-county councilor who advocated against the project, John Barth, came up with what he considered to be a common-sense solution. The city is resurfacing the road and painting shared lane markings for bicycles and motor vehicles. He called it "the best approach that works for the most people." The cyclists lost the battle, but what stung the most was the fact that Barth, who has been one of the leading voices behind pedestrian safety efforts, had seemingly changed his tune after receiving pushback. "Never meet your heroes," one cyclist told me. — Peter Blanchard
