Millions of birds migrate through France each year, but power lines can be dangerous 🦅 Our #SL4B partner @lpofrance.bsky.social mapped high-risk areas for bird collision helping @RTE & @enedis protect biodiversity. 👉 Explore the maps: www.safelines4birds.eu/post/using-s...

🐦⚡ Big step for #SL4B! With @lpofrance.bsky.social, we’ve published France’s first national sensitivity maps showing where birds face the highest electrocution risk on power lines. Helping @RTE & @enedis act efficiently to protect wildlife.

Could UV light from ACAS affect insects near powerlines? 🐞 LPO France is now monitoring insect activity with camera traps and moth surveys 🦋 to study potential impacts.

Stay tuned, the collected data will be soon analysed 🔬 and the results published.

How do you protect birds from hitting power lines at night?
France tested UV-A light tech on high-voltage lines in key habitats for Cranes & Bustards.

@rte_france & @eliagroup.bsky.social led the trial—BIOPOLIS is now analysing the results.

The Eurasian curlew is at risk of collision during migration

In Belgium 🇧🇪 & France 🇫🇷, TSOs are installing bird flight diverters 🔴 on 60 km of high-risk power lines—cutting collision risk by up to 85%.

Ospreys 🦅 nest near water—but often choose power lines, putting them at risk of electrocution ⚡ This is due to various factors, like a wingspan up to 180 cm.

To avoid these risks, #SL4B partners install safe perches & retrofit poles to keep these iconic birds safe🪶

Some birds can see UV light 🔦

#SL4B partners in France 🇫🇷 & Belgium 🇧🇪 tested the Avian Collision Avoidance System (ACAS) a device using UV light to make power lines visible to birds at dusk and dawn 🌙

🪶 Known as Pharaoh’s Chicken, the Egyptian Vulture is a clever, tool-using bird & Europe’s only migratory vulture. But it’s in steep decline and needs safe nesting sites🪹 So, #SL4B is working with grid operators to reduce disturbance during breeding season

Have you heard the trumpeting call of migrating Common Cranes? 🪶

Each spring, they fly from Africa & southern Europe to breed in the boreal forests of the north. It’s a stunning journey — but also a dangerous one. 🌍

How can power lines be safer for birds, like Bonelli’s eagle 🦅 & more reliable for people 👥?

Small changes to pylons via retrofitting & adding bird-safe perches lower the risk of electrocution for birds AND the risk of wildlife-caused outages & wildfires 🔥

Black Storks: We like them, so we put a ring 💍 tag on them!
These protected birds face major threats, including power lines, which cause electrocution ⚡️and collisions 🚧 The #SL4B project is tracking them to inform better conservation strategies.
