My second attempt at a #StarTrek captain's chair, circa 2022. Found a crazy good deal on a salvaged automotive seat, so naturally I wanted to see who I could put it to use. Went for more of a First Contact/Picard era vibe on this one. Much more comfortable! Details in later posts.
A black and charcoal gray driver's seat, salvaged from a Tesla Model X. An incredibly janky 3d model I kludged together, showing the rough configuration and scale of the final chair I wanted to build. The seat is rendered in white, the plywood parts are rendered in gray, and the aluminum arm is rendered in a metallic silver. A rough mockup of the final captain's chair, so that I could understand the proportions before starting to build. The arms and armrests are made of EVA foam floor mats and are held together by blue masking tape. The chair base is literally just a beverage cooler tipped on its side. Extremely professional operation. The finished product, weeks later! The chair base and armrests are made of plywood, painted in a dark gray. The central pedestal features illuminated decorative grilles. The chair arm that swoops under the seat is made of laser-cut and hand-filed brushed aluminum. The seat itself now features a stamped silver Starfleet delta on the headrest.

Continuing to excavate the archive of stuff I posted on Twitter that I'd like to have here: some progress pics of the #StarTrek captain's chair I built in 2017. Considering it was my first woodworking effort, I think it turned out OK.
How it all started: a set of printed out blueprints and two pieces of lumber sitting on a 1:1 scale top elevation drawing of the chair I built in 2017. Making progress: 10 stacked pieces of plywood I cut out using a jigsaw to form the basis of the Kelvin timeline captain chair's iconic curved arms and armrests. I want to emphasize that these were basically the first wood cuts I ever made, so be gentle! Down the road: a partially-finished version of the Kelvin timeline captain's chair, primed in gray. I made a few corrections to this shape after sitting in it. Near the finish line: the nearly-done Kelvin timeline captain's chair, with a few coats of white paint. From this angle you can see where the working tablets slotted in and connected to their USB power sources.

This was the #StarTrek captain's chair I built a few years ago as my first real woodworking project. It was my rendition of the 2009 Kelvin Timeline captain's chair, made mostly of plywood. I learned a lot in the process! Having my own was a dream of mine since childhood.
