You don't have to turn the recording device into a character, though I love that trope, it could just be really good acting and story telling.

Like I have the basics of a story and I don't have to write every second of their lives but I also can't just have them suddenly be where they need to be. There needs to be a journey, and growth. Maybe the medium is what's wrong. Maybe I should do audio drama with it instead?
