TEAMWORK
The whole collection was REALLY cute. I used to be frilly til I took an arrow to the knee but I LOVE the new designs coming out lately. Glad my old finding-channels still worked lmao

Hey I DID end up doing #HourlyComicsDay2025 this year. I skipped last year from ennui but despite it this year it felt like I should. I'd planned a more interesting day to document, but I think of Mrs. Gibbs in Our Town: "Choose the least important day in your life. It will be important enough."

Another REALLY IMPORTANT honorable mention!!
Full Moon wo Sagashite! Even though at even my most peak Shoujo, the eyes never got THAT big, the flowers, the ruffles, the ribbons, the fluffy wings, I was obsessed. That and the absolutely TRAGIC story; the "looks cute, is about death" started here.

The chokehold of Yuu Watase can't be overstated. I remember spending hours trying to figure out how she did "fuzzy" eyes. I know know she probably does a line and uses white over it, but as a kid I tried to do tiny scribbles and couldn't grasp it! The perfect whispy, soft hair, too.

Honorable mention: Magic Knight Rayearth. it was REALLY hard to leave this one out because I loved it so much, but I don't think it influenced me artistically as much as the others. I read a LOT of CLAMP.

I talked about Swan on the other place, but I'm still determined to do a ballet short story at some point (A retelling of Giselle is what I'm noodling on.) Coming across this in a Borders blew my mind with how frames are structured, movement, emotion, everything. It's long but it's SO beautiful.

Dolls - This was an anthology series about doll-like creatures that were shaped to be human but were closer to plants. I thought the exploration in what made someone human was fascinating, and again, how different people treated them and gave them humanity, or realized their own through them.

The OG. I have a Sailor Moon tattoo, she is everywhere in my house. Besides just being a gateway to comics for me, the atmospheric panels that emphasized the characters' reactions and drama and elegant poses were just catnip to me, it seemed so light and effortless. The item design was adorable too!

Chobits/Angelic Layer - Other than the visual style, I was so taken with the concept of how robots were treated and addressed, and the human relationship with them was really formative to me. I'm always afraid to reread because I don't know how well it holds up. but I'd love to see it revisited now.

If we're talking #comicsdna ... These are usually the 4.5 I list-- the .5 is atually Angelic Layer, which is TECHNICALLY in the same universe as Chobits so it counts as one. I'm counting all of these as things I read before I went to art school and had my taste rearranged some.
