For the record: this isn’t a niche clinical issue.
◾ Preterm-born children make up 8–10% of all births
◾ That’s 2–3 in every classroom
◾ They're overrepresented in mental health services
Yet their needs are often overlooked as their early birth isn’t always recognised as relevant beyond infancy.

These factors explained 30–40% of the variation in resilience.
And that’s hopeful:
Many of these are modifiable, so there is real potential to support more preterm-born children to thrive.

These factors consistently promoted resilience across both cohorts:
✅ Better self-regulation
✅ Higher cognitive abilities
✅ Positive mother-child relationship
✅ Structured family climate
✅ Strong interparental relationship
❌ Fewer experiences of bullying

With @dieterwolke.bsky.social @warwickpsych.bsky.social, we studied over 1,500 preterm-born children (ages 7-8) from the UK and Germany.
Children with better-than-expected mental health (for their gestational age) showed resilience.
What helped them thrive? 👇
