Developers are lining up and waiting for your 3D fill poly engine. The arrival of Starfox Next is now imminent.

like watching an old school Amiga gfx demo, but in realtime.

Next has various DMA modes: Burst or Continuous Mode. In Burst Mode, the DMA allows the CPU to run between transfers. Continuous Mode halts the CPU entirely during the transfer and Fixed Time Transfer Mode is a hybrid where the DMA pauses briefly for the CPU at fixed intervals -which one do YOU use?

Good reading. On my first rubber speccy, I changed ULA several times. Today, or rather for the last two decades, I have only been using emulation.

DMA and CPU are filling the polys.

The Gaussian curve says that there are people who stick to 1 platform regardless of financial gain/time loss. On the other side is the other extreme. And in between are people who are happy to earn at least enough for a cup of coffee when they work on the game for months or years in their free time

For example, Radastan mode 128x96 pixels in 16 colors with a framebuffer of standard ULA size, i.e. approx. 7KB, is still in the backup, and it should run at devilish speed on Next. Also, 25Hz Wipeout, um, Starfox should be no problem.

There will be no terrain with texture in the cosmos, so you should have enough budget for filled polys. On the land where the texture is, you can try to see if you can fit into 4 V blank with poly objects. I'm curious. Probably someone will try pure solid polys without textures, like Damocles.

kid .. The invention of the spear, steel, steam engine, atomic energy, transistor, quantum computer, or AI is still the same thing. Evolution never stops. And Musk is a sick psychopath. Wake up.

Why is it such a problem on Amiga to have music and audio effects playing simultaneously in a game? Engine sounds in one channel and some dance/trance music in the other three channels? I never had an Amiga, but I played Lotus and XJ220 nonstop at my friend's house.

heh .. I responded to cpt. Kirk in your message. This is the first time I am watching the entire original series. In Eastern Europe under socialism, it was not possible. I started watching Star Trek with Picard in German dubbing on satellite TV after the regime fell in 1989.

I'm now on episode 4 of season 2. I put off watching the entire original series for years. I'm really enjoying it, I'm averaging 1-2 episodes a day.

Ask Allen Albright specifically, he is the chief programmer for FW Next and knows very well that its DMA has great reserves. I have read that he is working on a new DMA mode designed specifically for your needs (well .. I just don't know if he can fit it into the FPGA capacity).
October 16, 2025 at 7:48 AM
Next has that other DMA mode (burst), which should free up the blocked CPU more (I know you don't use it), and AA is apparently working on another "third" DMA mode, which should be much more suitable for what you need? I don't know if you have any info from them.

btw I believe this chap would be happy to help. Demoscene coder etc.

@ped7g

expect retro computers (ZX Next), programming (assembly), general IT rants, and lot of grumpiness and toxicity.. but with love.

"This is why I love social media. I have just learned of ... " If someone presents their hyper-optimized code, which aspires to win the Nobel Prize, on a specialized ZX forum for coders, you will find out that you is actually a cretin with a dead brain and should stick to Print "Hello world", heheh.

During socialism, we published nice books with commented ASM ZX code for some routines from our best coders, and it is shocking to see how manual tuning achieves dramatic "tick" optimizations.

This means that when you are in space and fly away from a planet, it will shrink like in ELITE, and vice versa, when you fly towards a point, it will enlarge to the size of the entire planet, duh.

One must admire how unusually and ambitiously 3D things were created so early on.
