2/2: …pick up & there was barely a ripple on surface of the south beach floodwater.
This area of beach is west of the West Light area, & the #lighttower is just barely visible, as slim as a needle, on the distant dune line.

2/2:… very high winds of the past 2 weeks, some interesting features have appeared.
In the distance, a single horse is silhouetted against the bald dune’s slope. In the absence of trees & structures, the horses are often the only clue to appreciating the scale of Sable’s landscape.

3/4:….formerly done by horses.
When the vehicle eventually broke down near West Light, it was too heavy to move & became a landmark. For some years, filled with windblown sand, it had provided a sheltered habitat for a few nesting birds.
A week after Rose knelt & leaned in to hear & hum in harmony..

2/4: …on the rusted & half-buried remains of a Bren Gun Carrier – a lightly armoured, tracked vehicle used during World War II. It was not in service on Sable during the war, but was brought to the island in the late 1940s, & used to haul wagons & lifeboats, & move heavy loads, to speed up work…

3/4: …Even their last recorded peak pup production on Sable, in 1989, was only 625, compared with recent Grey Seal pup counts of 70,000. Various factors are likely responsible for the decline of the Harbour population here, including competition with Grey Seals and predation.

2/4: …The seal noticed the surveyor but appeared to be more interested in something happening at the shoreline where some Grey Seals were hauled out.
Six Harbour Seals, including two pups, were sighted on the island this year. Sable’s Harbour Seals are greatly outnumbered by Grey Seals….
