To me, it felt like that whole sequence of events (bleeding into HW as well) posed the question: "Are you this good because you're Hydaelyn's champion, or in spite of it?"

It felt like we as the player got to decide for ourselves how to view that connection.

I don't really like super cliche "Chosen One" stories unless they do something unique with it.

Until Elpis, the story builds you up as this prodigal combatant, even compared to others with the echo, especially when Midgardsormr seals our connection to Hydaelyn, testing us on our own merit.

It was more as a setup to frame that idea.

To me, the concept of Dynamis fueling the WoL's successes, combined with the fact the events in Elpis explaining why our character is the WoL, really detracted from the character's own agency.

Yeah, but that's just less fun. I've never liked the whole "WoL is stronger because of the power of friendship through dynamis" trope, because it feels too convenient.

I enjoy the idea that they work hard to maintain their skills, and even without the Echo, are a prodigious fighter because of that.

We're not really getting "stronger" in a conventional sense, but instead the WoL is always improving the mastery over their own aether, and weaving it to produce stronger effects, with less waste.

Meanwhile, the ancients with insane reservoirs of aether, have never had to contend with that problem.
