Now that I am older, I realize that it is not knowing myself that is advantageous - but knowing what others become. Yes, I could ensure that I wouldn't make the decisions that broke my heart. Instead, I now know who became someone never worth my heart, regardless of what they seemed to be in youth.

The other option seems no better. I could completely avoid metagaming and go down a completely different path. But then my knowledge wouldn't be of much use - I would be thrown into a new unknown making equally disastrous mistakes that I would then want to relive. A recursive problem.
