Richard B Spikes (1878-1962) was a prolific African American inventor with many patents, including an improved gear shift, automatic car washers, a beer tap, and a bus safety brake. His work spanned industries, showcasing his ingenuity and advancing transportation and daily life. #BlackHistory

Charles R. Drew (1904-1950) was a pioneering African American surgeon and medical researcher. He revolutionized blood storage and transfusion, developing blood banks. Despite his life-saving work, he faced racial discrimination, including segregation policies in blood donations. #BlackHistory

George Walker (1922–2018) was the 1st African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music (Lilacs, 1996). He was also the 1st Black graduate of the Curtis Institute, 1st to play NYC’s Town Hall, 1st with a doctorate from Eastman, and 1st tenured Black faculty at Smith College. #BlackHistory

Robert Smalls (1839-1915), once enslaved, became a Civil War hero and politician. He seized the CSS Planter, freeing himself and others, and delivered it to the Union. Smalls later served in the South Carolina legislature and U.S. Congress, championing civil rights and education. #BlackHistory

Mary Ellen Pleasant (1814–1904), a wealthy abolitionist, possibly 1st black self-made millionaire, used her role as a servant to infiltrate elite circles, gather intelligence, and build networks. She secretly funded abolitionist causes and supported the Underground Railroad. #BlackHistory

Lonnie Johnson (1949- ), an African American engineer, invented the Super Soaker, a 1990s global hit. He worked for the U.S. Air Force and NASA, aiding the Galileo and Cassini missions. Holding 120+ patents, his innovations span clean energy and battery technology.

Elbert Frank Cox (1895-1969) was the first Black man in the world to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics. His research in differential equations and celestial mechanics made significant contributions to the field. He chaired the Howard U Math Dept from 1957 to 1965. #BlackHistory #STEM
