The sunset LED greeted her warmly when she entered, casting Curly’s body in oozing reds and oranges as he lay there wheezing like he always did. The lock clicked softly behind her, and Anya smiled at him, more genuinely than she had in days as she walked to the counter where the last bottle of paracetamol sat. She picked it up and turned it over in her hand idly. “How are you feeling, Curly?” She asked, eyes not leaving the bottle. She tried to count the pills left inside and reread the dosage, more interested in the quiet rattle than whatever grunts and moans Curly made in response. “I hope it isn’t too bad. This is the last bottle of painkillers on the whole ship.” Anya leaned back against the counter and rattled the bottle for punctuation. “After this you’ll have to make do with mouthwash like the rest of us.” With another huff in place of a laugh she added, “Though you’re already looking pretty fire fresh to me.” She stopped smiling and set the bottle on the counter. “Sorry. That was mean.” Curly let out a couple of wheezes and whines in rapid succession, and the ghost of Anya’s smile returned to her face. “Are you laughing?” She asked. Curly grunted. His eyelids were long gone but he had gotten semi-decent at flexing the muscles left in his brow and cheek into a fraction of an expression, though that could’ve been Anya’s eyes playing tricks on her. He almost looked relaxed around her sometimes. Anya thought if the LED wasn’t stuck on the sunset that maybe Curly could look relaxed. If nothing else it would be easier to see which parts of him had scarred over and which parts were still raw if he wasn’t cast in red all the time. He still looked freshly degloved, even though he hadn’t torn or rubbed anything open in a few days, the blood on his gown and bandages dried brown.
