Beyond the effect on personnel, the impact on the programs that we have been building is devastating. Work in humanitarian emergencies and to protect human rights is full of delicate relationships and structures, building networks and momentum that will be difficult to just switch back on again.

I think of my colleagues around the globe who also had no notice that their jobs were ending, many of whom have families that rely on them and live in precarious contexts with limited options available. And this situation amplified across civil society, affecting so many talented and devoted staff.
