Hi Jon, follow up question here: can you clarify if it is as cold as balls or in fact, colder than balls?

There is something transparently pathetic about “in the movie version of Carl Sagan's book Contact”. Why not “from the movie Contact”? He thinks it sounds smarter if he hint it’s from a book by a known smart guy even if the specific example isn’t actually in the book.

It's clear we're just talking ourselves in circles at this point. If you want the final word, be my guest, but I don't see any point in continuing this conversation from my end.

Another meaningless distinction. We're judging the decision. If the root of the argument is “the decision is good because of the line”, whether they used the line or you're just using it support the decision is both irrelevant to what is being judged and an unknown from our outsider perspective.
January 26, 2026 at 10:59 PM
Once again, you’re just weakening the language and pretending it’s a different thought. “They aren’t using the line to make a decision, they’re using it to help make a decision.” That’s the same thing!

But the 2 sides of that 2nd assumption are the same, youre just changing the verb phrase from “will score” to “may have been needed”. The underlying issue is treating the line like a prediction of an outcome (which it isnt truly) and then using that to dictate the strategy of achieving that outcome.

The problem with both scenarios is treating the total like a target that will be hit. The RB example says he’s got 50 more yds in him and the 4th down says the game has 30 more points in it. Coaches making decisions with that assumption is a mistake whether it’s one play or the rest of the game.
January 26, 2026 at 8:03 PM
I said “big run” so I can see why you think I was suggesting the RB would get 50 yards on a single play, but that was not the situation I was outlining. A 15 yard run on 3rd and 8 is a “big run” in that context. The criticism was in believing the expected total is somehow owed to the team/player.
January 26, 2026 at 7:20 PM
I don’t know man, your smarter than me with this stuff, but if you can’t actually reason through why it’s different and your only argument falls back to a simple it’s just different, maybe that’s a sign that this logic needs more thought.
January 26, 2026 at 6:45 PM
And a RB who is 50 yards below his projected rushing total doesn’t have a “reasonable expectation” to gain 50 more yards? It’s the same logic applied in a sillier manner to highlight the absurdity of the logic itself.
January 26, 2026 at 6:35 PM
Using a betting line this way to justify a coaches actions is wild. Imagine saying they should call a run on 3rd and 8 because the team’s RB hadn’t yet gone over on his rushing yard so he can be expected to break a big run. That’s effectively what you’re saying.

I love that Flo’s most prominent friend is Natalie Palamides who is a subversive clown that has a Netflix special about consent in which she performs in male drag spending like half the show topless with a big rubber dildo between her legs. All commercials should underwrite that kind of art.

When a bunch of low odds outcomes happen, how do you distinguish the “very weird year” from the model being flawed and spitting out odds that are too low?

Life is a video game to these guys, now they are just playing for a high score, their only reason to live is to see that number go up

Happy Birthday! Thanks for all your work over the years! It's been quite the ride seeing you reluctantly goaded into telling Amy Poehler the dead eyes story on TCGS to discussing it with Hanks on the pod. Looking forward to GLTS every week helped keep me sane during those dark days of lockdown.

I don’t know how you folks in the industry handle it, this is disappointing and frustrating enough just as a fan, I couldn’t imagine if my livelihood also depended on people like that

“There’s still money to be made before the bubble pops” is a wild argument for someone to make

Hey, I’d love to buy your ticket if it is still available! The show sold out before I could get one
