You're talking to a fulltime animator (for now). It's basically what you're commissioned & you're stuck with that job until you choose to quit, or there's an agreement to cut the project.

It's long & complicated, but it's also wise to 1st work for a company before going independent.

The answer for me is having a day job & commissions.
Ideally it should still be in a creative field, but it can be anything, so as long you're doing art on the side.
