Former journo for a site you might have read. W-Mass community evangelist, volunteer, and town representative. Holder of strong and sometimes retrospectively wrong opinions.

VP of US Vibes at a PR joint, but my career doesn’t define me.
Spent the last few weeks in Shenzhen. Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.

Feels like the stories I used to hear about the way the Bay Area was in the 80s and 90s.

People here have crazy dreams to build crazy shit. I’d love to be here longer to see more of it come together.

First time to Japan (in Okinawa), and so much about it is rad. The US could simply never sustain cloth curtains on a public bus.

Some fun shots from town today.

Cooking is one of my favorite activities. I insist on cooking breakfast every single day, and I feel like I’m starting to get sort of adventurous with it.

Today’s is jalapenio, shiso, and onion rice porridge topped with fried bacon, sweet potato, and poached eggs, with sesame oil and ponzu.

Gotta pay the troll toll to hike behind the cottage.

All this to say: Van broke, but Van fixed.

My Vanagon is now part Range Rover.

Significant improvement over the stock mirrors, swapped the OG allen key adjustment screws for some stainless steel philips head ones, for easier and corrosion-free roadside tweaking.

Local VW car show had a hot thing. Van didn’t win any awards, sadly.

Best part of Pepper Season is that it is also Inner Beauty Hot Sauce Season.

❤️/RIP my insides. The scotch bonnets are REAL feisty this year.

Hiking can keep you sane in 2025

So I bought a fully furnished house in a small New England town, and we’ve been living here for five years. Today we found two of these boxes in the garage (place was filled with stuff, still organizing it), and I’m pretty sure this is how the horror movie part starts.

Woke up at 5:30 AM for a 4.5 mile hike before work on a section of the Robert Frost trail. Climbed Mt Tom before breakfast!

Life can still be good in the midst of all the ongoing fascist bullshit.

Ran into this big fella on the trail today. I think it’s an Ichneumon Wasp of some kind. Was a few inches long. Very chill, though.

Been hiking almost every day the last couple weeks, and it’s made a huge difference in my attitude.

Urge anyone else upset by current events to spend a little less time here and a little more time out there. Lots to see.

Managed a solid hike every day this weekend. Got some good cardio in.

When cat, but also nautilus. And also red.

Nothing like a dip in the river on a hot day.

Nice little Sunday hike up to Mount Sugarloaf for the view — and the just-post-rain aroma of the New England woods.

It is cocktail season, my dudes.

So glad to be mostly done with the porch after two years.

Hand-sanded, washed, and oiled the deck. Actually really enjoyed the process and the results. Looks incredible. Grain on the ipe really pops now.

Gotta calendar up making sure to do this once a year!

Been working on a pretty extensive front porch repair/rebuild for a year now, and it’s finally done.

Real, real pleased with the result. Lot of fun details and room for even more planters.

Pinball night is a restful respite.

I enjoy cat. Cat also enjoys me.

This smoker has a lot of other minor foibles in how it works, but being able to see just how smoke is rolling off the meat to ensure even spread for the good formation of bark is pretty great. You can move stuff around pretty easy to compensate.
