LLM lack the ability to determine ignorance: This is the core of it. Unlike a human expert who can say, "That's outside my field," or "I'm not sure," an LLM's fundamental design is to always provide a response. It has no meta-cognitive ability to recognize the boundaries of its own knowledge.
