The old adage about the wide 9 technique was that the defensive end does not have to set the edge, he IS the edge. Check out Brandon Graham here cutting off Mahomes and not giving him the edge forcing him to not extend the play and settle for check down 6/8:

Generally, the purpose of the Wide 9 has traditionally been to line up your athletic edge defenders and have them speed rush and bend the edge. Fangio used his athletes to instead use the additional space to gain momentum and steam and bull rush the Chiefs tackles over and over again. 2/8

It was something I meant to go back to but haven’t had time. In short, they’ve actually dropped to 55.6%. But anecdotally, I feel they’ve looked better with more targets for A.J. Brown and more passing overall. I’ll re-visit for sure after the Super Bowl victory 🙂

Agreed. But still time for the offense to get in a groove! Would rather they do it on the back end vs. The front end!

The tush push and Saquon Barkley are great assets for any red zone offense. The 2024 #Eagles are calling conservative in the red zone to get to the tush push. They are moving the ball as well as any team between the 20s. Optimizing in the red zone is their key to the Super Bowl.

AJ's strength is not a jump ball player on fade routes in the end zone in small spaces. But given the attention Barkley and others are commanding underneath, the #Eagles would benefit from taking more aggressive early down deep shots to AJ in the high red zone.

To come back to the top. The #Eagles just need to feed their best receiver in the red zone. 3 targets is unacceptable. It doesn't have to outsmart the defense. This is what great players are for.

Hurts is doing a ton of work with his legs and quads in the red zone. But for a mobile QB we need to see more of this. Extending plays in the red zone is a huge asset for an offense. Terrific play by Hurts. We need to see more.

Another nice 4 wide concept and respect for Barkley in the flat. The #Eagles are trying to isolate Dotson on the whip route. Look at the space in the middle of the field the scheme creates. The player needs to separate here.
