A private citizen ritualistically adhering to the code without regard to their personal opinion about the deceased public official does seem a bit odd, I suppose

Having a preset list of senior current and former officials whose deaths trigger the flag being lowered at government facilities seems sensible (as opposed to, say, having a committee in every town decide whether to lower the flag based on whether the newly deceased official had good enough vibes)

Before writing about historical middle class prosperity, you should have to use the SDA tool on IPUMS Census microdata from when you were a kid to estimate the standard of living of the median family in your county of birth (in terms of income, vehicles, bedrooms, bathrooms, appliances, etc.)

This is not rare but it’s also not the norm. In the 2022 SCF, among households earning between $50k and $100k, only 25% of households had non-mortgage debt payments exceeding 10% of income. (Only 11% of households had debt payments exceeding 15% of income.)

I just checked their website hoping they would have a preposterously long menu, a bunch of Italian dishes, and either an Eastern European or Middle Eastern section. It did not disappoint. But I did not expect sizzling fajitas or 12 oz burgers. Impressive.

California passed a law banning plastic bags last year (effective in 2026) after its original ban (allowing plastic bags to be sold for 10 cents a piece so long as they were technically reusable and recyclable) actually increased plastic waste by weight

Sometimes it’s fun to see how the sausage is made before your very eyes, perhaps with a bit of showmanship. It’s a bit like going to a concert or play (instead of listening to a recording or watching a movie). A nice change of pace, even if you wouldn’t want to do it all the time

I see clips of it somewhat regularly on TikTok and I’ve long wondered if it’s actually good or just serves visually appealing dishes designed for Instagram. (I’ll have to check it out.)
