Inflation is the most authoritarian way to fund public goods. Progressive taxation is the most democratic.

The powers that be just prefer mechanisms that keep the public confused and keep accountability away from the top.

Universal healthcare, paid leave, childcare, or a four-day work week aren’t impossible. They’re only controversial because they shift the cost away from ordinary people and toward the wealthy.

The real question is who pays — and how.

When we finance things through inflation, everyone pays, especially workers and families. When we finance through taxes, we can choose to put the burden on those who actually captured the gains of the last forty years.
