With a big, sloping bill that blends into an orange-ish face bedazzled with a fiery red eye, drake Canvasbacks can be rather striking when seen in good light.

Although Canvasbacks mainly breed in the Canadian prairies, huge numbers winter around Chesapeake Bay, like this bird. #birds

A couple years ago, Limpkins exploded out of the southeast and showed up all over North America.

This bird appeared in central Missouri in late summer and stayed past Thanksgiving, which allowed me to see it when I went home for the holiday. #birds

It’s amazing that a bird as tiny as a Dovekie can survive winters on the open sea.
