You can tell that no one thought the South Side Elevated was going to be around for much longer by how they cobbled together this hilarious bridge-on-a-bridge thing over the Dan Ryan instead of building a proper new structure.
The South Side Elevated passes over the sunken Dan Ryan Expressway by means of a bridge that acts as an intermediary (where ground level used to be) that holds up the original elevated structure

This example is such a perfect encapsulation of everything wrong with transit in much of the U.S., and especially with Chicago's governance structure.

There's no incentive for anyone in power to fix this. It's hard to interpret the result as anything but open hostility toward passengers.

What can you even say about this?
A very rickety, rusty looking cast iron staircase leans up against the back wall of a building to provide access to and from an adjacent roof deck. It's not level--it leans at a small angle--and is clearly not mounted into the concrete pad that it rests on.

In fact, this is a really stupid and dangerous intersection. You come around that blind corner from the south and encounter people merging in from the north. It would be safer to eliminate the access road from the south and only have people come in from Zemke, from the north
