Terribly sad. Conor examined my DPhil, with good humour and thoughtful constructive criticism, and was unfailingly generous then and for years afterward.
The news of Conor Gearty's death has just been announced and I'm not coping. He was a mentor and the pole star in my constitutional thinking. He was also a great friend and fantastic fun to be around. I'm heartbroken for Aoife and the children.

It's a hard sell, but more politicians would be good for Aus:
* Deeper talent pool for committees & ministries
* More access - most Aussies have never interacted with their local MP
* Reverses the growing physical size of rural electorates
Since 1980s, Aus added +11 million people and no new MPs.

Some interesting ideas in this, and noticeable that the Canberra model is increasingly in vogue among reformers; @lewisbaston.bsky.social was similarly arguing a few months back that the UK could do worse than adopting an Australian-style parliamentary system.

I'm probably missing something, but it looks a bit like the Greens' lead ACT Senate candidate may be vulnerable to a s44 challenge on a similar set of facts to those in Gallagher's case? Perhaps there are more recent updates not available in the AEC form. www.aec.gov.au/election/fil... #auspol
