and someone's children didn't come home safe and alive today, and that is not ok. there isn't enough space in this mama's heart for these feelings. we failed them.

Honey, lockdown is sometimes a practice for if there is a bad guy or an emergency. When it's just a caution, it is to practice how to keep you safe. Were you safe? Then you did a good job. And mommy came to get you to make sure. Because you are the sun and the stars and the moon.

I don't have the language to explain to my 5 y/o. "Mommy, we were on lockdown, but it was only on caution." My sweet boy, someone at the high school you will be zoned to attend decided to bring a gun to school and shot two people and their self.
