How do you even make a guitar sound like this?????

Holy crap

I often feel like we’ve reached the point in modern metal where things can’t get any crazier. Then I heard Mirar

Oh yeah

We never have family breakfast together, so we thought this morning we’d make some bacon, eggs, and pancakes for us and the kiddos

I have made way too many of these things

Got Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson yesterday as a gift from my wife’s grandparents. This is the brand new book in my all-time favorite series, so I’m gonna start today!

Have to shout out this incredible artwork

My three end of the year videos are all on my YouTube channel now! My favorite, most impactful, and most disappointing books of the year

Doing a brief cleaning shift this afternoon. Gonna listen to my favorite Christmas album!

I was in the middle of wrapping Christmas gifts and ran out of tape

Ranking every Star Wars book I read this year

(RR) = reread

Once again, this one includes a couple deathcore-style breakdowns and heavy orchestra use, but brings things in a much more melodeath-adjacent direction. Even some elements of power metal make their way in. Truly epic and awesome. This album feels like it was made just to appeal to what I love

1. Assemble the Chariots - Unyielding Night

This one took me by surprise. I’d heard a couple people talk about this band, but went into this album totally blind. I was blown away by what I’d heard. This is one of my favorite melodic death metal albums in years
December 22, 2024 at 5:48 PM
Not only does this include the style’s signature heavy breakdowns, melodic riffs, and symphonic elements, but it also blends in a significant amount of clean and operatic vocals that gives this album a unique sound compared to others. This has been one of my most listened this year

2. A Wake in Providence - I Write to You, My Darling Decay

Speaking of cookie cutter symphonic deathcore, that’s how I’d felt about AWIP in the past—good, but unremarkable and somewhat generic. This album changed that. It’s a true breath of fresh air for the genre

Another thing I love here is the implementation of classical elements. A lot of the orchestra and solos take inspiration from classical compositions, with the song Winter even being a full deathcore cover of a Vivaldi song. Super cool

3. Disembodied Tyrant & Synestia - The Poetic Edda EP

I’m not done with DT yet! The EP they did with Synestia is a fan favorite in the deathcore scene for a reason. Great riffs, crushing breakdowns, and epic symphonic elements make this a personal favorite for me
December 22, 2024 at 5:48 PM
Modern symphonic deathcore is a genre that a lot of people are kind of tired of. A lot of bands are doing the same sort of knockoff Lorna Shore style, but DT really does something more unique. I love it

4. Disembodied Tyrant - The Tower: Part One EP

All my favorites of this year were some form of deathcore, starting with one of the best up-and-coming bands in the genre. This EP is brilliant from start to finish—brutally heavy, creative in its structure, and epic at several moments

VOTW is not only awesome overall, but features a strong sense of spacey atmosphere and some melodies that have been stuck in my head for months. If you like your black metal to be more atmospheric and cosmic, give this one a try

5. Labyrinthus Stellarum - Vortex of the Worlds

Like power metal, this year was pretty light on black metal for me. However, this album really did blow me away. Cosmic black metal is a style I’m pretty interested in, but I’ve heard little that sounds quite like this
December 22, 2024 at 5:48 PM
This album was such a pleasure the first time through. In a year where many of my favorites are darker, more extreme metal albums, this one filled me with joy. Nobody does this mix of black metal, shoegaze, and post-rock quite like Alcest

6. Alcest - Les Chants des l’Aurore

I freakin’ love Alcest, so I was overjoyed to hear they’d be putting out their first album in five years this year. And not only that, but I’d say this is debatably their best work yet—a high bar to clear
