Honestly I think Bomberman Generation is the first “Modern” Bomberman. It’s the game where the classic battle music was unceremoniously dropped.

Final Fantasy XIV, followed closely by Persona 5 and RollerCoaster Tycoon

Final Fantasy V. It’s not necessarily disliked, but it’s vastly overshadowed by the games that came directly before and after it, and yet I genuinely enjoy it more than either of them.
