chapter one, in an abandoned cabin outside of a hometown, on a hot august night.
Michael was suffocating. He was awake, but some heavy force was sitting on his chest, smothering him entirely. He couldn’t open his eyes. Every limb was weighed down with pressure, but he was awake, and he had to rise. It was a frantic urge. He felt as though he was sinking downwards, pushed back under the waves of sleep by watery pressure, and if he didn’t claw his way towards the surface, he would drown. Slowly, shaking, he raised his right arm from his side, the limb juttering violently, trying to snap back to its restraint. Michael gasped for air. The pressure on his throat barely let him breathe, but he had to fight, and he whispered, little more than exhalation, as loud as he could: “Help me. Help me. Help--” A rough hand shook his shoulder, and Michael lurched upright, sight regained. “Hey, easy there, kid. Come on.” Marisol let him topple sideways into her. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders, his head in the crook of her neck, until the thunderous, leftover sleep-fear receded from him. Her long hair sheltered his face. Michael pulled back. Marisol leaned to the side between their sleeping rolls and lit the kerosene lamp, the warm glow flooding the small wooden room.

the best i can offer for this... marisol without fail has the most dramatic, ominous entrances and leo without fail ruins it by going marisol!!! omg marisol hi!! did you miss me i love you where have you been i missed you
“Can you hear me?” murmured Marisol. Taloned hands landed on the backrest of the fainting couch, framing his shoulders. Leo sat up straight and her long hair trailed over the sides of his face. He felt his awareness grow hot on the back of his neck; the painful sensation of prey. “Marisol,” he laughed, and reached upwards tilting his head backwards to try and hold her. She dodged him, laughing back softly. Leo didn’t let her go that easily, twisting around on the seat and rising to his knees to fully embrace her, throwing his arms around her neck. “I get it,” Marisol complained. “Hey, hey, kid.” But she wrapped her too-long arms around him all the same. The slight alienness to her sent goosebumps over his skin. Somewhere behind her in the dream was the rustle of wings. Leo dropped off her, kneeling on the couch, thrilled that she was there again.

Behind her, Merrick muttered an appeasement to Condor under his breath-- the incorrect Barrancal interpretation of St. Rooster, and a blasphemy that Jenny had tried to correct out of him several times. It was a losing battle as she didn’t want to get him in any further trouble. At least Condor and St. Rooster were, theoretically, the same spiritual being, and not whatever strange devotion to intangible ‘threads’ the Abrarians insisted upon.

sometimes i feel like i get it right first try
writing excerpt: Leo leaned off the side and watched the segmented slink of the train bend around the dry hill corners, the hills crumbled in early autumn, the sky white-orange with dust. The dirty metal sides of the train painted brightly kept in contrast to the untouched rocky landscape. The trees clinging to their leaves. They passed dark red fields. Cloud cover kept the heat down, enough that Leo took off his hat and began to take his hair out of its twists, combing the cooler air over his scalp. He could not get enough of the land out here. It was similar in phases to his cattle-lands in western Kenos, in the beige smudge of the hills, the rocky shelves of the hills, the dotted scrub-grass, but here was so much flatter, and the train kept on and on in a straight line once they were out of the hills, passing almost nothing, straight on into the newness of Abrarria. They passed one last town with its red roofs. There was a graveyard on the edge. Leo stood upon the heap of gravel to watch. Aquarius skidded on the heap to stand by his side and took his hand. The daylight faded. The vastness consumed them. Leo threw back his head and howled; Aquarius joined gladly.

near to the end of act three, after aries dislocates his own shoulder to escape. i may have to kill a darling for no snow in this scene, but in the meantime…
Exit. The door had a heavy metal push-bar, and Aries slammed the full weight of his good side against it. The steel crumpled, and he tripped over the threshold into the blinding cold. He fell to one knee; snow soaked through his jeans. Aries scrambled to kick the door shut behind him, it folded again with a wet-sounding pang, and then there was only the roar of the storm. He sprawled out in the snow. His chest spasmed with breath after breath, and Aries stared up at the white swirl of sky, desperately trying to control his breathing. He still wasn’t safe. But he couldn’t move again, not with the pain and the awful combination of the freezing weather and the blaze of his skin. His tears steamed off of his face. No one is coming to save you. Aries clamped his teeth together, whimpering again, and set his hand on his loose shoulder. He had to do it right for it to heal.

“Oh, shit, the pigeons are getting soaked,” said the girl with a lazy delight. Jenny glanced over, shocked at her language. “C’mon little guys, don’t live up to the dumb-as-rocks stereotype of your species. Here ya go.” With that the Zodiac leaned out into the rain and bodily grabbed one pigeon around its back, the others scattering away in a panic. Jenny’s mouth fell open. She watched, rendered speechless, as the girl pressed the stunned pigeon close to her chest. “There you go. That’s warmer.” That had been like watching someone catch a fish with their bare hands. Jenny cast around for anything to say but her mind had been wiped blank.
