What I always wonder is why lugers go feet-first. I'd want to go head-first and die instantly rather than be accordioned from the bottom up.

I would love to be represented more fairly! Every time I see the "call your senators" thing I'm like, sure, I can leave a message on their voicemail. The 2 senators representing almost 40 million of us don't have enough staff to answer calls. I can call my House rep's office and get a person.

To me the best reason to divide California is to make it more governable. Creating 3-4 new states in its place that have similar urban vs rural conflicts, but with 2-3 of them being significantly less rich than one, seems problematic.

The interior counties tend to be conservative, and Trump won most of them. Only horizontal lines would create new majority Democratic states -- a permanent gerrymander that would make no sense politically or geographically.

Thus dividing up the large SoCal population. But the money is concentrated in the Bay Area. There are if I'm counting right 42 Fortune 500 companies in NorCal and 16 in SoCal. 8 of the 10 richest zip codes are in NorCal. That's a lot of the state's tax base. You'd create some much poorer states.

"Democracies need room to maneuver as they strive to defend peace and security in the Western Hemisphere, Europe, and Asia from these illiberal regimes."
I don't know what planet John Torture Memos Yoo lives on, but on Earth the US president is threatening democracy as well as peace and security.

You are on a PSA roll today, and as a long-time fan and fellow pedant, I applaud you.

For Jan 31 the flyer says 11-1, the website says 10-12.
I'm signed up, but which is the correct time?

Just a rando buying groceries, but I don't see this in this chart. Expectations were 20-25 points below conditions before covid. Now expectations track conditions more closely. So it looks like people used to be pessimistic but are more realistic now, and economic conditions are what's down-shifted.

There's gonna be people like those Japanese guys who hid out in the Philippines refusing to believe WW2 was over.

Years ago on a surface street during rush hour my car died in the middle of traffic. I started to get out to push, and three young men appeared out of nowhere, waved me back into the driver's seat, pushed the car out of traffic, and vanished as quickly as they'd arrived.
