This was such a treasured book for me as a child! I took it on every holiday, desperate to see and identify more butterflies.
I’m crap at identifying butterflies these days (probably because it’s been years since I looked inside this book) but the lessons of how to use guides like this remain. 🦋

Just when I thought things couldn’t get any more dramatic on the #Springwatch live wildlife cameras, a weevil invaded the ant colony. It’s been a dramatic battle as the ants have fought to keep the weevil out of their nest for the past 20mins!!

Either I’ve been spending too much time staring at these chicks or this is really starting to resemble a monochrome macaroni penguin… it’s got the “crest” and the grumpy look. Do I just need to get out more?! Thoughts? #springwatch

Spoiler alert… all is not as it seems in the short-eared owl nest on #Springwatch All will be revealed on tonight’s show at 8pm on BBC2.

Obsessed with the tawny chick today on #Springwatch cameras 😍 It seems to have a young dead rat as a ready meal in its nest, although it’s proving a little big to eat right now!

Best seat in the house for the live show! Another fab evening enjoying #Springwatch from the story developer’s truck watching all the action on the live nests alongside the programme.

Am completely in love with the short-eared owls on #Springwatch Fascinating insight into a nest you rarely come across, let alone get a front seat to view!

A curious Southern rockhopper checks me out with a somewhat bemused expression (who can blame them?!)

They are such characterful penguins & it was great to spend so much time with them in the Falklands while filming #secretsofthepenguins

It’s #WorldPenguinDay which seems like a pretty good excuse to start sharing the latest series I worked on as a producer - #SecretsOfThePenguins is out now on Disney Plus.

Have you seen it yet? 🐧

It’s #SuperSeabirdSunday and todays picture is another from Nightingale Island… an Atlantic Yellow-nosed Albatross chick! This bird was right next to the path and a little curious as I carefully sauntered past. Check out those huge feet!!

Well it’s #SuperSeabirdSunday and I have news as well as a picture to share… this week, I landed on Nightingale Island near Tristan da Cunha 😁 It was wildlife heaven. First time seeing a colony of Northern Rockhoppers, distinguished by long crest feathers that mimic the tussock in which they nest.

It’s still Sunday here in South Georgia so I’m able to share some penguins for #SuperSeabirdSunday
Feeling grateful to have been able to watch some moulting macaronis this afternoon, before they head off to spend winter at sea! These guys will leave next month and won’t be back until October.

In other news, I was on a ship passing by the now famous iceberg A23a when this plane flew over. Weird to see aircraft down here, so was very interested to see this story to find out what they were up to… news.sky.com/story/amp/wh...

The light, the backdrop and the still calm water makes for a pretty magical experience in Antarctica. In our frantic world, it’s nice to switch off and enjoy these peaceful moments. This is the Neumayer Channel 😍

News here is that I am on a boat heading back to Antarctica! Excited to be back to sharing my passion for penguins (and other birds, wildlife, snow, etc) as a guide for the final month of the season 🤩

Light mantled albatross!! Sharing a special photo for #SuperSeabirdSunday … this is an IPhone shot!! 😱 This gorgeous bird landed right next to me while I was sat on a cliff top path on Marion Island. 🥰 (distinguished from sooty albatross by blue line along beak - sooty has a yellow line)

Snipe and jack snipe ringing LIVE last night on #Winterwatch - a great piece by @iolowilliams.bsky.social and Paul from @harbourbirds.bsky.social
Grateful to all from Stour Ringing Group for catching birds in a timely manner! A highlight from the series for me…

Such a great buzz and exciting vibes in the #Winterwatch gallery tonight!

Working in Dorset on Winterwatch so penguins are few a far between. As it’s #PenguinAwarenessDay I’ll share the only one I’ve found today. (Will try and find time for a proper pic later!)

I’ve nothing new to report on the reading front today, so sharing the book my daughter Adelie is reading… a lovely Christmas gift with a great main character created by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler: Jonty Gentoo! 🐧😍🐧

Sharing another king penguin photo from my phone for #SuperSeabirdSunday You can see the juveniles finishing their moult from fluffy feathers into adult plumage - note the very pale yellow colouration which deepens into orange as they mature, as per individuals on the left of the picture. #penguins

Due to a busy weekend, I missed #SuperSeabirdSunday 😱
Here’s a gentoo penguin photo to make up for it. These inquisitive chicks were around 7 weeks old and readily explored their surroundings while waiting for the return of parents with food. Starting to moult into adult plumage - head first here!
January 6, 2025 at 6:38 AM
Good morning! Celebrating #SuperSeabirdSunday with a gentoo that looks like it’s eaten a bit too much. I thought, perhaps, this might be something some of us can relate too… ahem.
Photo shows how their “wings” (aka flippers) are used to help these penguins balance while walking. #Penguin
