so we run into issues that seem strange and take a ton of time to debug without any real guidance. After working with it for a year I've gotten more used to it and can work with it better, but its more tedious than one would expect, to the point where programming it yourself seems faster and nicer.

Oh definitely! I should have been more clear, the platform and sensors work pretty well and I do like using them. The frustrations usually lay completely with ros for me haha. Our laboratory is pretty small with noone that is really experienced with ros.
