Maybe it's not that important to this discussion, but I think it was always Rock and (or 'n') Roll music until roughly the time long-form FM's rise to prominence ca. 1967. "Rock Music" was perhaps not very often used as a term until maybe the late 60s or early 70s.

Sorry for your loss. I read Down With Tyranny not only for the political takes, but for all the great stories about so many recording artists who never might have achieved their success without his backing. As with Mo Ostin, they just don't make 'em like Howie anymore.
