As someone who frequented 924 Gilman Street (punk rock venue in Berkley) in the 90's, it always hurt to see bands like Green Day, Rancid, and AFI "sell out" when they did. In hindsight it was necessary growth. "Influencers" will never have the same cultural significance but rather be a drain on it.
