On a fine day on the coast near Porthmadog, plumes of smoke rising from the surrounding hills show landowners hard at work creating black deserts. Not all the fires are controlled.....

Knockbrack Megalithic tomb, Co Galway, Ireland, looking out across Sellerna Bay, close to the village of Cleggan. An area with many other sites to visit. My photograph, February 2016

#TombTuesday. Cairn G, one of the 14 tombs in the Carrowkeel megalithic cemetery, Co Sligo, Ireland. Note the roofbox, better known from the far-more visited Newgrange. You are far more likely to be alone up here than at Newgrange. My pictures.

There is no case to be made for the humanities or any other field that won't be rebutted or ignored by some vice provost or consultant or jetski dealer in the legislature. You join with your coworkers. You build your union. You exercise sufficient power. Or your field dies.

Private Eye No 1638, out this week, carries news of the woes of undergraduate students and staff facing "relocation" to the Carmarthen campus. See "High Principals" on p37. The report is not complimentary to UWTSD over its handling of the matter.

Here is the petition to Senedd (raised in addition to the earlier Change.org one) to raise concern at the #UWTSD proposal to remove undergraduate teaching from Lampeter in 2025. A Welsh version is available. Note the lower thresholds for review.

If undergraduate humanities students move to UWTSD Carmarthen, but postgrads and library remain in Lampeter, where are staff based? Is there room for them in Carmarthen? Doesn't look like much cost saving possible. So why move? And what of the large Academy of Sinology investments in Lampeter?
